Design Strategies For Dark Hallways

Light-colored walls can brighten a dark hallway.

Dark hallways impart a cold and unwelcoming ambiance; walking down them isn't a pleasant journey. Dimly-lit passageways may cause accidents -- tripping, bumping into things, falling down. Transforming your dingy hallway into a bright, vibrant space can make the pathway safer and more enjoyable. Interior design tips for making a dark hallway warm, bright and inviting include using suitable colors, brightening the space and avoiding clutter.

Paint

Cover the hallway walls and ceiling in a fresh coat of paint to brighten up the dark space. Lighter paint colors -- whites, creams, beiges, icy blues -- tend to reflect light, making a hallway appear larger and brighter. Satin and semi-gloss paint finishes are shiny, having a greater capacity for reflecting more light. Paint the wall at the end of the hallway a slightly darker shade than the walls and ceiling to provide visual interest and a bit more color.

Light

Illuminating a hallway with natural and man-made light is an ideal solution to brighten up a dark passageway. By taking down window treatments that cover hallway windows, natural sunlight can stream into the space. If privacy is a concern, consider replacing clear glass with frosted or acid-etched glass panes. Installing a skylight lightens up the hall with bright sunlight and soft moonlight. Recessed ceiling lights lighten up a hallway and are ideal for lower ceilings. Wall sconces provide decorative light in wider passageways. Sparkling chandeliers or graceful pendant lights add a dramatic effect while illuminating a dark hallway.

Visual Interest

Placing a focal point at the end of a hallway creates a visual destination to encourage venturing down the passageway. Hanging a large piece of colorful artwork spotlighted by a gallery light provides a focal point, as well as illuminating the area. Consider hanging framed, black-and-white photograph arrangements or similar artwork groupings in hallways with wider passages. Positioning a large mirror on the wall at the end of the hallway is ideal for reflecting light and brightening a space. A hall runner laid over wood floors imparts texture, color and warmth to a hallway.

Furniture

Furniture placed in a dark hallway can add function and aesthetic appeal. Avoid placing heavy, cumbersome furniture in hallways; lightweight, petite, multifunctional furniture works best. Storage benches provide a place to keep backpacks, school books, mittens and scarves, while providing a place to sit and put on shoes. Placing a small console table in the hallway accommodates keys, wallets, purses and other personal items. A hall tree supplies a convenient place to hang jackets and hats, as well as a space for storing umbrellas.
