Granite is often used in kitchens as a countertop surface because of its durability and ease of cleaning. Granite countertops have turned into almost a art form in themselves, because of the hundreds of different varieties of granite available for counters. Because of this variety, it can often be difficult to choose a color to paint the rest of the kitchen. However, with a few simple tricks and color ideas, the paint selection will be a breeze.
Contrast
The key to painting a kitchen that will blend with a granite countertop is contrast. Light granite counters, such as beige and tan, should have a darker paint on the walls. Darker granite colors, such as brown and black, look best with lighter colored walls. If you follow the contrast rule then your kitchen will look professional, modern and elegant.
Neutrals
Neutral colors can go with almost any color of granite counter. The key is to choose the right neutral to go with each color of granite. Cream or white granite counters will work with browns and taupes. Golden toned counters will work with brown or white walls. Brown granite looks good with tan, white or cream colors. Jewel toned granites, such as green, will pair well with almost any neutral color. Black countertops look sharp with white or cream.

Jewel tones also look amazing with granite countertops. Jewel tones are usually considered the colors that occur naturally in jewelry, such as deep blues, vivid greens and brilliant reds. These colors can be successfully incorporated into almost any kitchen with granite countertops. Jewel tones work best in kitchens with wood cabinets, which help balance out the bright colors. Choose colors that complement the countertops and the cabinets for best results.
Coordinating Colors
One of the best ways to find a rich color tone to complement the granite countertop is to take a selection of rich paint color samples. Test each sample against the color of the counter. If the color pops out against the counter's hue, or if the counter suddenly looks more striking than before, then that will be a great color to consider painting the walls. Lighting should also be considered. If you have a lot of yellow
lights, do not choose yellow or green colors, as this can create a sickly feel in the kitchen. However, creams, yellows and oranges work fine with yellow lighting.
