Mexican Style Interior Fresh paint Ideas

Mexican decor is an increasingly popular style, particularly in the southwestern region of the United States and in California. You can opt to add some simple Mexican touches with paint and accessories for a little Mexican flair, or do a full-on home makeover in brilliant colors.

Style Options

Mexican style is actually a rainbow of styles, some of them regional. The beach style features a lighter palette and echoes the blues and greens of the sea and the whites and yellows of sand. The colonial hacienda style is earthier, with reddish brown tile floors and splashes of intense color on the walls. The rustic style often features paint treatments to make walls and furniture look aged.

Principle Colors and Accents

Mexican interior paint often features yellow or antique white walls. Sponge-painted walls may feature stronger yellows. Principle colors are typically warm tones, but accent colors include indigo, intense orange, rusty red and deep green. Kitchens sometimes feature busy tile work in multiple patterns contrasted with bright splashes of yellow, green or blue paint. Contrasts are welcome in Mexican decor--just look at a painting by Frida Kahlo or a Mexican vinyl tablecloth for inspiration.

Details

Mexican decor is all about the homemade and the handmade. Painting is no exception. Rather than create a slick, glossy look, go for matte tones. Distress surfaces by painting one tone, covering it with another, and lightly sanding the surface to allow bits of color to show through. Add to the rustic element by using stencils to create simple decorative borders. You can also try freehand painting details, especially around door frames and window frames. Hand-painted tiles are another great accent to personalize a Mexican-style painted room.
