Replacing old paint can spruce up your garage walls.
Painting the walls in any room can set the mood and d cor for that space. This is no different for the garage, which is often the most used entryway for your home. A well-painted garage can encourage you to keep it neat, tidy and clean. The variety of painting options for your garage is as wide as it is for any room in your home. Choose a color and style that fit with the d cor of your home but are practical.
Black Border
One of a homeowner's concerns when painting a garage is to choose a color that does not show dirt, oil or grime that is often abundant in a garage. One way to do this is to paint the garage with a dark color. However, if you're not a fan of dark colors in small spaces, consider painting a black border around the bottom of the garage walls. The first few feet of the wall are often the dirtiest and spots will not show up as easily on a black wall. Use painter's tape and a level to tape a level line just a few a feet above the bottom of the wall. Remove the painter's tape when the paint is almost dry. Continue painting the other portion of the wall whatever color you like.
Dark Paint
If using a lot of dark paint in a small space does not bother you, paint your walls black or use another dark color such as blue or gray. Black oil smudges will show up less on these dark surfaces than on white or other light colors. However, dust may show up more on black walls than on white ones.
Racing Theme
If you're a NASCAR fan or are interested in working with cars, you can paint the walls of your garage with a racing theme. Use your favorite colors or the colors of your favorite racer to paint a horizontal racing stripe around your garage. Painters tape will help you mark out the line before you paint. Painting a black-and-white checkered racing flag on the wall will help finish off the racing theme.
Chalkboard Paint
A garage painted with chalkboard paint gives you plenty of space to write your to-do lists or draw DIY plans. This is an especially useful way of entertaining children. Another benefit of using chalkboard paint is that to clean the walls you simply wipe them down with a wet sponge. Most chalkboard paint is either gray or green. However, you can make your own chalkboard paint by mixing 1 cup of flat finished latex paint with 2 tbsp. non-sanded tile grout. Use the paint as you would any other paint.
