Paint a Car Flat & Clear
There are always new trends popping up in the world of custom painted vehicles. One "modern" trend actually originated decades ago, and that is flat paint. Old hot rods were painted with a flat paint and no clear coat, which was bad for a car's finish. Nowadays you can have the flat paint look with the protection of a flat clear coat to keep the base color coat safe from the elements. Learn paint a car flat and clear to get the best possible results.
Instructions
1. Pour the amount of base coat paint you want to use into a measuring cup. Add 1/4 of that amount of reducer so the paint is ready to go. Now add the flattening agent. The amount of flattening agent you add depends on how dull you want the finish to be. The more flattening agent you add, the more dull and flat the paint will look once dried on the car. Stir the mixture with a stir stick.
2. Wipe the car's surface with wax and grease remover and a microfiber towel. The car should already be primed, sanded and ready for paint. Wipe the surface at least twice immediately before spraying the paint.
3. Spray three coats of the flat paint on the car, waiting at least fifteen to thirty minutes between each coat. Once the last coat is on, wait an hour before moving on the the clear coat paint.
4. Prepare the clear coat paint while the base coat is drying. Mix the clear using the same amounts and formula as with the base coat. Use one fourth of the amount of reducer as you do clear coat paint, which means if you use four ounces of paint, only add one ounce of reducer. Add the flattening agent to your desired amount. Mix with a stir stick and pour the mixture into your spray gun.
5. Spray three to four coats of the flat clear coat paint, waiting fifteen minutes between each coat. Once the last coat is on, wait five hours before touching the paint. The paint may look glossy, but will become flat once dried.
