Create Your Own Fresh paint Plan

Painting, whether on the inside or outside of your house, always looks better when you use more than one color. Too many colors can spoil the overall effect, but a small selection of matched paint colors can really make a difference. Using a few painting ideas to design your own paint scheme can make your living space stand out.

Instructions

1. Start out with the basic principle of creating a white or light colored ceiling, using some color in the walls and then adding more color in the trim paint. Use flat latex paint except in the bathroom and kitchen, where you will probably want to use a semi-gloss for the walls. Paint the wood trim with a solid semi-gloss or gloss paint. You can even use an oil-based paint for the trim, if you don't mind the extra sheen.

2. Extend the color scheme of one room to the next or, better yet, make a slight variation of the same color scheme for each room. Also, if the wall color you are using is very light you might consider using the same color for the walls and ceiling.

3. Use warm colors like a burnt orange, clay red or an earthy yellow for places like the bathroom, kitchen and living areas. You can complement this nicely by using a cool color for the bedrooms and upstairs bathroom, if you wish. For the bedrooms, you might consider a pale blue or indigo, a light mauve or even a deep emerald green to simulate the color of the forest or a garden.

4. Plan on experimenting with some sharp color contrasts in a few selected areas to add accent and life to your living space. This location could be the entrance way, pantry or perhaps even your dining room. Any one of these interior spaces could take a sharp splash of color on the walls to contrast with the rest of the house. Some striking color combos that you might consider: a deep blue wall accented with a burnt orange trim, a clay-colored wall contrasted with an earthy yellow or a light spring-green wall matched against a midnight blue trim. These suggestions are just a small sample of what is really possible.

5. Try painting a bedroom (one that gets lots of sunlight) with a deep wall color and a very light colored trim hue. You can even use a pure or off white for the trim.

6. Add that little touch that makes a place stand out. There are lots of ideas for this concept. You can use painted wall stencils as a border around the edge of the ceiling or a doorway. You could paint all the doors a distinct color, which sets them apart from the rest of the house or paint all your kitchen cabinets white and then add some abstract designs or painted pictures of fruit on the doors. Maybe there is even an alcove somewhere that could take its own unique color. The list of possibilities is endless.
