Petroleum based products like gasoline can cause paints to break down.
While fixing bubbling paint from a gasoline spill is a relatively simple project, it should be done with some care. You will need to sand parts of the tank, causing heat and friction which may start a fire. If possible, remove the tank from your motorcycle or have it removed after emptying the tank to reduce the risk of injuring anyone while repairing it.
Instructions
1. Wash off the exterior of your tank. Use a soap that breaks down petroleum and rub off as much of the bubbling paint as you can.
2. Use a sanding block to smooth out the edges of the non-peeling paint and to remove any excess damaged paint. Start with 1500 grit for larger debris, then move to 2000 grit or finer when smoothing out the paint.
3. Purchase paint the same color as your motorcycle. This is relatively simple if you have a newer model motorcycle with factory-standard paint, but for older vehicles or those with special paint jobs you may have to get the paint specially made. You can buy the paint in car supply stores, specialty airbrushing shops, or sometimes even at big box stores like Walmart.
4. Paint the tank according to the manufacturer's directions for the paint you have purchased.
5. Cover the dried paint with a coat of Carnauba wax or sealant to protect the new layer.
