The den and great room are often places where men gather to watch television or work. To make it unique, this space should be decorated in a way that appeals to a man without seeming overdone. One motif that's not often used is men's vintage clothing, which can be found in plentiful supply at auctions and second-hand stores.
Instructions
1. Create a focal point in the room. This could be around a fireplace or against a wall.
2. Select a masculine color for the paint. Deep burgundy or hunter green are smart choices. If you're afraid of painting all the walls a deep color, use a striking color on one of the walls and do the rest in off-white or tan. If you paint only one wall, this could become the room's focal point.
3. Bring in whatever furniture that you're going to have in the room. In addition to couches and chairs, this could include coffee tables, end tables and lamps.
4. Use vests, jackets and shirts to make throw pillows. See Resources for ideas about make these.
5. Add some throw blankets to the chairs in complementary colors and styles.
6. Display a few of the vintage jackets in large frames. The jackets should lay flat in the frames and have some sort of backdrop, perhaps an old newspaper that features men's fashions. You could also go with a piece of patterned silk.
7. Create shadow boxes holding vintage clothing and accessories, such as bow ties, old-fashioned pipes, cufflinks, antique watches or tam o'shanter hats.
8. Frame men's fashion illustrations from old magazines. Hang these with your framed jackets and shadow boxes.
9. Have pairs of vintage shoes bronzed and mounted. Use them as bookends.
10. Add old-fashioned hat stands to the shelves and put vintage hats on them.
11. Dress a mannequin in a vintage suit. Put it in a corner to create a secondary focal point.
