Decorative Painting Suggestions For Concrete Stoop & Steps

Decorative Painting Ideas for Concrete Stoop & Steps

Concrete typically is drab and gray, but several painting methods can help spruce it up. By doing things like faux painting concrete and stamping designs, you will save money and create a different look than typical concrete. By painting things like your steps, you will add décor to your home before people even see inside.

Solid Colors

Paint your steps solid colors to match the décor of your house. For example, if you have a house with a white picket fence, paint your steps off-white. Steps that are painted bright white may be too bright in the sun. When you decide to paint your steps or stoop, prime it first because concrete is porous and without primer will take several coats.

Faux Techniques

Using faux techniques on your concrete step or stoops will give the illusion of natural stone like marble or granite. There are two ways to paint your concrete with faux techniques. One is to paint it like you paint a wall. Put down the base coat of whatever color you want and then use a technique like sponging to create the effect of granite. However, this will create a texture on your concrete as well, so if you want smooth steps, try staining them. Staining is another method of creating the look of natural stone. To achieve this look you stain the stone like you would stain wood.

Stamped

Stamping concrete is another way to paint concrete and give it a decorative appearance. There are many different options that come along with stamping from a decorative piece to the appearance of natural stone. Stamping is done by applying paint to rubber mats that are then pressed onto the painted concrete.

Coating

You can paint your concrete with a clear glaze. This is often done in garages, but it can also be done on concrete steps or stoops. It takes away the harsh, uneven feeling and look of concrete. However, take into consideration that this will make the surface slick when wet, so it is not ideal for areas where sprinklers or rainwater can reach.
