Repaint Stucco

Painting stucco adds beauty to the surface and helps protect the stucco from the elements.

Stucco is a concrete-like masonry coating used as home siding. It has the advantage of being durable, easy to install and repair, and accepts paint well. Like most masonry, stucco cracks and breaks down over time through exposure to the elements. To help prevent or delay this, paint the stucco with good-quality primer and paint to seal and protect the surface and add to its durability.

Instructions

1. Wipe off any debris, dust, dirt or cobwebs from the stucco using a broom or heavy brush.

2. Fill any cracks or small imperfections using paintable caulk to seal the stucco from the elements. Allow the caulk to dry for at least an hour so it cures enough for painting.

3. Spray the walls down with a garden house and wipe them with a sponge to remove any grease or foreign substances from the surface. Allow the stucco to dry for several hours.

4. Apply a coat of primer paint to the surface with a thick paint roller. Cover the entire stucco surface evenly to add a protective layer to the walls. Allow the primer to dry completely according to the product packaging. Clean the paint roller and allow it to dry completely.

5. Spread the finish coat of exterior wall paint over the stucco with the same roller used to apply the primer. Work from the top down so you don't have to worry so much about paint dripping or running down the wall. Let the walls dry for two hours, then repeat with a second coat.
