Repaint Scratched Stucco

A stucco surface has a rough texture.

One of the easiest home repair projects is touching up scratched surfaces, including stucco. Stucco is a finishing material commonly used in parts of the country that have mild winters since it is durable and reasonably easy to apply. One of the most challenging aspects of touching up stucco is matching the paint to the existing surface since the sun can fade the paint or coloring in stucco, sending you to the paint store in search of a good match.

Instructions

1. Check your extra paint for stucco. Stir the old paint and dab a small amount with a brush on an inconspicuous surface to see if it matches the rest of the stucco. If it does not, chip off a small piece of painted stucco to take to the paint shop or home improvement store. Most retailers have computers that can match your paint. If they don't, use the paint chip samples to match the sample as closely as you can. If the store does not have skylights to let in natural light, take the chips to a location where some natural light comes through the doors or windows to verify the match. Florescent lighting changes how colors appear.

2. Clean the area with a brush or a can of compressed air to remove any excessive dust. You can also use the hose to wash off the dirt, allowing the area to completely dry before painting it.

3. Place the drop cloth beneath the area where you are painting over the scratches.

4. Use a bristle paintbrush on the stucco surface. The inexpensive foam paintbrushes disintegrate quickly when painting on stucco, and the torn shreds may stick to the stucco surface.

5. Apply the paint over the scratches, feathering it into the rest of the surface to blend it.
