Consider all existing colors in the kitchen when choosing a paint color.
Painting changes a room dramatically while costing little compared to other makeover options, making it an attractive choice for many people who want to update a room or enjoy a new look without investing heavily in the process. The paint color you choose for any room in the house depends largely on personal preference, but there are some important tips to consider when choosing a color that suits you and will enhance your home. When painting a kitchen, there are some additional considerations to be made regarding the best color.
Instructions
1. Choose your favorite colors. Bring home samples of these colors and examine them in the kitchen. Look at them in different locations, from various angles and at different times of day. Write down anything you especially like or dislike about particular colors and then choose your two favorite colors based on these observations.
2. Use a color wheel to find additional or accent colors if you plan on incorporating more than one into the kitchen design. Avoid the temptation to skip this basic step. Spend time examining the color wheel and various options, and you may well find a perfect color combination that you had not previously considered. Colors opposite each other on the color wheel make a bold statement, while colors next to each other will provide a subtle, more sophisticated feel to the kitchen.
3. Conduct a paint color test with your choices. People often paint part of a wall with a color to observe it in the room, but consider painting canvas boards about the size of a sheet of paper in your primary color choices, as suggested by HGTV. Move these boards around the room and observe them, much as you did with the initial paint samples. You can see how the colors work in different areas of the kitchen this way without coating each area of the room in multiple colors.
4. Examine how your color choices interact with existing furniture, cabinets, major appliances, counters and floors. Do not choose paint that looks questionable with these items, no matter how much you like the color. You should love the look when you see it all together. Increase the likelihood of your new paint color blending well with existing objects by either choosing a color with the same undertone or a complementary one.
5. Examine colors for the kitchen to determine the best color for the way you use the room. Consider darker colors around cooking and eating areas if you are a messy cook or have small children who tend to touch walls. Light colors, such as different shades of white, reflect light, making a room appear large, bright and clean while ensuring adequate light in working areas.
6. Return to your color wheel one last time before making your final choice. Compare the color you have chosen for the kitchen walls with the rest of your home. If you want the home to have a feel of continuity to it, ensure that the color of the kitchen and nearby rooms complement each other. You can also make a bold statement with entirely different colors that clearly define each room individually.
