Prep Aluminum Siding For Fresh paint

Aluminum siding is beautiful and low maintenance, but it can lose its original color and luster. Painting it is a good option for color correction because it costs less than replacement and you can do the project yourself. If done properly, the prep process will remove the surface stains and oxidation that dulls the finish. It will also make the paint adhere better and prevent the paint from peeling. Removing any contaminants and oxidation with the right cleanser and a power washer will make your paint last for years.

Instructions

1. Move all obstacles and outdoor furniture away from your home. Take down any house numbers or mail boxes that have been mounted on the siding.

2. Fill the detergent container of your pressure washer with a cleanser formulated for metals. Never add chlorine bleach to a pressure washer. It will not apply evenly and will damage your siding. Home improvement stores carry a variety of liquid cleansers that are safe for aluminum siding.

3. Put on safety equipment to protect your body from accidents. Safety goggles, gloves and long pants are your best protection when using a pressure washer.

4. Following the pressure washer's instructions, start at the top of the siding and spray the siding with the pressurized water and detergent combination. Spray with the grain. Never hold the nozzle closer than 12 inches from the surface to avoid damaging the siding.

5. Rinse the siding with a garden hose and allow it to dry for at least 48 hours.

6. Apply an oil-based primer made for metal that has been tinted to match the finishing coat of paint. Allow the primer to dry naturally before applying paint.
