Fresh paint Wood Lap Siding

Do not paint bare wood lap siding without priming it, first.

Wood lap siding is a popular choice for many homes because its overlapping construction style provides a classic look while allowing the wood to contract and expand in varying temperatures. If you wish to paint your wood lap siding, you must condition the wood to promote adhesion before you paint, or the finish will fail, over time. In addition, you should employ a particular application technique that will ensure complete surface coverage within the crevices and seams running horizontally throughout the siding.

Instructions

1. Wash the wood lap siding using a pressure washer. Wait for the siding to dry.

2. Protect areas on and adjacent to the lap siding by covering them with a low-tack painter's tape. Protect areas below with fabric drop cloths.

3. Roll on a single coat of latex primer to a 5-foot wide section of the wood lap siding. Roll vertically, and then brush horizontally using the brush, effectively working the wet primer within the crevices and seams running horizontally. Continue applying primer until all the siding is coated. Allow two hours for the primer to dry.

4. Wash all painting instruments with water.

5. Put a new, clean nap cover on the roller frame. Roll on a coat of latex paint just as you did the primer. Allow two hours for it to dry.
