The Very Best Wall Color For Top Roofs

Make your home look bigger or smaller with the right wall color.

Most new home construction will come with high ceilings. Although higher ceilings will make the room and your home feel much bigger, painting the room the wrong color may give the wrong feel. Whether you want the room to feel even bigger, a little more cozy or a bit creative, there is an option for you.

Warm Golds

Paint a high-ceiling room in warm golds to make the room more cozy, but without visually shrinking the size. Warm golds like honey, copper, golden walnut or even a yellow-orange will bring more warmth into the room. These colors will slightly reduce the visual size of the room, making the room seem less massive and more comfortable. Pair these warm golds with beige or tan furniture, accenting with red or brown pillows, throws and accessories. This color combination will continue to increase the warmth of the room and reduce the size of the ceilings without the room becoming too dark.

Light Creams

Paint your room in light creams if you like the look of your high ceilings and want to visually increase the height. The light and airy creams -- like a butter yellow, winter white or antique white -- combined with a pure, bright white ceiling, will draw the eye upwards, making the room feel palatial. To prevent the room from appearing monochromatic, select a piece of printed furniture and soft colored pillows to pull in some design and color.

Bold Color

High ceilings give you the freedom to really experiment with color. Choose a deep wine red, navy blue or hunter green to slightly decrease the visual height of the ceilings. To prevent the room from looking too dark, accent the room with white or light-colored furniture and accessories. Keep in mind that rooms with more natural lighting will also keep the room for appearing too dark. If you're not quite ready for bold colors, consider an accent wall. Paint the entire room a neutral, light cream color, then paint just one wall in red, navy or hunter green for a touch of color.

Stencil

Break up your room using a large stencil to add some creativity to the large space. Purchase or create your own large stencil using cardboard. Paint your room in a warm, neutral color like khaki. About three-quarters of the way up your ceiling, tape off a 36-inch area going around the walls. You might paint this 36-inch area a deeper shade the walls -- like a light brown -- to add more depth and layers. Then, simply paint on your stencil in a warm, light neutral like beige or cream. The stencil will break up the large space without shrinking the room.
