Clean A Stucco House

A hose is often all you need to keep stucco clean.

Most people are hesitant about cleaning the stucco on the exterior of their home. Those small bumps and ridges that cover its surface look delicate. And no one wants to accidentally ruin the textured surface they paid good money to have installed. But stucco is not as delicate as it looks. Stucco can be cleaned much like any tougher-looking surface like brick or concrete.

Instructions

1. Spray the wall with water from a hose and spray nozzle. Wet the bottom portion of the wall and work your way up to the top. Use a wide spray setting, spray from at least 3 feet away and never leave the hose on one spot on the stucco for more than a second or so. Spray nozzles are great for loosening dirt on stucco walls but can cause damage if the spray is too concentrated.

2. Spray the walls a second time, working from the bottom upward, to wash away loosened dirt and debris. Observe the stucco. This spray wash is enough to clean light dirt and debris and often all you need for a regular maintenance clean.

3. Fill a bucket with warm or hot water and trisodium phosphate powder (TSP) diluted according to the manufacturer's instructions. Stir well.

4. Dip a long-handle natural bristle brush in the solution and scrub the wall. Work from the bottom of the wall upward as you scrub. Always keep the stucco surface wet as you scrub. When the surface is wet, it allows dirt and debris to slide off the wall. As the stucco dries under a dirty surface, dirt and debris get absorbed into the stucco's many pores.

5. Rinse the detergent away with water, starting from the bottom of the wall and working your way upward.
