Homeowners often prefer paint over wallpaper or other coverings because it is easy to apply, easy to change and very versatile. You can paint just one color on your walls or paint each wall a different color. You may want to paint your walls a solid color or create an effect. Paint effects and treatments are changing every day and there are many new techniques to make your walls look sleek and original.
Fabric Walls
Give your walls the look of fabric with a dry-brushing technique. Mix 2 parts any color latex paint with clear glaze. Paint a vertical stripe of paint about 6 inches wide on your wall and drag a dry brush through the wet paint. This creates many small stripes that resemble threads. The glaze helps keep the paint wet long enough for you to treat the whole stripe. Paint the entire wall this way. Apply the same technique horizontally. This creates a very fine grid pattern that resembles a thread weave.
Use a medium-hue color for this technique. A very light color won't show the thread pattern and a very dark color will overpower the room. Create "patterned" fabric by mixing very small amounts of accent paint colors with glaze and stamping a sponge stamp over the wall before you drag the brush through the paint.
Decorate the Ceiling
Add punch and visual interest to your room by painting the ceiling. Paint the whole room, including the ceiling, one color. Use a ladder, painter's tape and a long-handled roller to paint wide stripes on your ceiling. You could also create a swirling pattern of stars, vines or flowers with stencils. Many people ignore the ceiling altogether when painting, but painting your ceiling can draw the eye upward so visitors see the whole room.
Choose a relatively light color for your base color in this case. Pastel blues, light greens and warm whites are all good bases. Choose 1 color for stripes, as they will alternate with your base color, and several colors of the same hue for coiling stencil patterns. For ease with stencils, tape a sponge to a broom handle and dab the paint on that way instead of using a stencil brush. The painting will go faster and your arm will be less tired.
