Watching Movies Fresh paint Colors

Keep paint colors dark to minimize light and reflection while viewing movies.

Home theaters are rooms dedicated to the enjoyment of a visual experience, so it should reflect that aesthetic even when the projector or DVD player is off. Select colors that are pleasing to the eye when the lights are on, but that maximize the visual experience during viewing. Paint the ceiling the darkest of your color choices, and opt for darker colors on the tops of two-tone walls or on the wall behind the screen.

Blues

Deep blues, from cobalt to navy, give a nighttime feel to your home theater space. They can make the room seem small and dark when the lights are on, making the room less appealing for other entertaining. Offset dark blues with cream or tan paint on the lower portions of the wall or with light-colored trim, carpeting, furniture or cabinetry. Gold accents go well with blue-themed home theaters.

Reds

Deep red colors in the wine to mahogany range offer the darkness needed for optimal viewing, but unlike blues, the warm undertones reduce the cave-like feeling in the room when the lights are on. Combining deep red walls and seating with light-colored carpet and mid-tone stained wood accents can create a luxurious feel in your home theater.

Browns

Rich browns that match wood tones or actual wood paneling create a warm atmosphere. Offset real wood wainscoting with dark brown paint on upper walls and ceilings. Use browns with a slight reddish or yellowish undertone to add warmth to the room. Use splashes of color in the decor, such as movie posters, to reduce the monochrome feel.

Grays

Apply dark bluish grays to the ceiling and accent walls, such as the wall behind the screen and the one opposite the screen. Use a mid-tone gray on the side walls, and accent the room with deep blue trim for a cooler nighttime look or mahogany trim for a warmer look. Silvery metal accents on light fixtures, shelving and other accessories add style to a gray-toned home theater.
