Wood furniture is a hallmark of rustic design.
Hallmarks of rustic design are natural materials such as stone and wood, and comfortable furnishings. Rustic design is equally at home in a cabin, farmhouse or cottage.
Instructions
1. Paint walls a soft neutral color or use wallpaper with a floral or woodsy print. Add a chair rail and beadboard paneling. Stain or paint the paneling a dark color, or go with bleached wood or light-colored paint.
2. Place a large cotton or wool rug in the center of the room over wood floors or carpet. Hand-knotted rugs in both solid and multiple colors work with rustic decor.
3. Arrange worn leather or upholstered chairs and sofas to promote conversation. Add distressed wood tables. Use hand-painted antique lamps on side tables and nightstands.
4. Hang framed paintings or prints of animals, flowers or woodlands. Painted wood duck decoys and fish are fitting accessories placed on tables and displayed on walls. Display a collection of plates with botanical designs, or salt-and-pepper shakers in outdoor themes, in an antique glass-front china cabinet.
5. Toss a well-worn throw and mismatched pillows on a bed or sofa.
Display a hand-stitched quilt on a bed or hung on a wall as art.
