Applying trim to the interior of your home involves installing baseboards along floors and trim such as crown moulding along the ceiling of the home. Some people choose to trim ceilings with wallpaper border, and some choose not to trim both the floors and ceilings. Trim can also be installed along the edges of doors and windows. Trimming the interior of the home helps to hide paint marks, cover rough ends of wallpaper, cover gaps between the flooring material and the wall, and make surfaces of all kinds appear tidier by covering seams.
Instructions
1. Decide on the type of baseboards and ceiling, door and window trim you wish to use. You may use all matching trim, or use different trims on each; many homes use matching trim for doors, windows, and baseboards, and thinner, more decorative trim along ceilings. Additionally, you will need to decide if you want to use wood, plastic or a composite material.
2. Full pieces of baseboard and trim might fit along some walls, but between close doors, at corners, and around doors and windows, you will need to cut the pieces down to size. For this, you might want to move the miter saw inside, near the area you are installing the trim.
3. For floors and ceilings, be sure the trim is pushed completely against the floor or ceiling and no gaps are present. Mount the pieces into place by nailing the trim into the wall with small tacks or nails. Use skinny nails or tacks with tiny heads so they do not show as well when the trim is completely installed.
4. Cut 45-degree angles at the ends of trim pieces used to surround doors and windows, in order to make corners look uniform. Use full pieces along doors and windows, as patching pieces together in these areas is more noticeable than along floors or ceilings.
5. If desired, hang a wallpaper border as an interior ceiling trim. Match up ends of patterns to make wallpaper border flow seamlessly from one sheet or roll to the next.
