Choose Colors For Interior Painting

Selecting the right paint color to complement your room's décor can be difficult and intimidating. The endless variety of colors available in paint stores offer ample opportunity for finding the perfect shade, but it can be difficult to know where to begin. Take time to prepare for this decision before you buy a few gallons of paint.

Instructions

1. Select the other elements of your room décor. This includes flooring, furniture and window treatments. The wide variety of paint colors available makes it easier to match your paint to the other colors in the room than vice versa. Get samples of the carpet and fabrics you'll use in the room.

2. Consider the tone of the room. Red, yellow and orange colors will create a warm feeling in the room; cool colors including blue, green and purple bring a calmer feeling. If you don't want a bright, bold color, consider a tinted white that will bring a very subtle tint of color to the room.

3. Choose a variety of paint chips in the colors you're considering. View these paint chips inside at various times of day, as well as outside in the sun. Compare the paint ships to the carpet and fabric samples to find a color that works well with these elements. Narrow your paint choice to two or three favorites.

4. Select a finish for the paint. Matte finishes will do wonders to hide imperfections on the walls. However, a gloss or semi-gloss finish will be easier to clean. The higher the gloss, the more light it will reflect in the room. Bathrooms should always have a semi-gloss or high gloss finish to hold up to the high moisture in the room. Glossier paints are also preferable in the kitchen, where splatters and stains often get on the walls.

5. Buy a pint of paint in each of your favorite colors. Use the paint roller to paint a small patch on the wall in the room you'll paint. Consider this test patch in all lights--morning, midday, evening and night.

6. Choose your favorite paint from the test swatches and paint the entire room. Give yourself several days to get used to the new color, especially if it's bright.
