Examine the warning labels printed on the side of the ladder.
If you are planning to paint a brick chimney, you should know a few things before you begin painting. Because brick is a poor candidate for adhesion, you must treat the chimney with a special type of primer, or the new finish will eventually shed. In addition, you should select a particular type of paint that possesses enough elasticity to expand and contract in varying temperatures. Finally, you should know the proper paint application techniques that will promote an attractive finish and minimize the risk of accidents and injuries.
Instructions
1. Use a ladder to access the brick chimney.
2. Use a pressure washer to clean the brick chimney. Wait two to three hours for the brick to dry.
3. Protect the roof below the chimney by covering it with fabric dropcloths.
4. Pour 2 gallons of acrylic latex primer into a bucket. Carry the roller up the ladder and set it on the roof next to the chimney. Descend the ladder and collect the bucket of primer. Climb the ladder with the bucket in hand.
5. Using the roller, apply primer to the clean brick chimney. Wait two hours for the primed brick to dry.
6. Clean the painting tools with water.
7. Apply acrylic latex paint to the primed brick chimney. Apply paint just as you did the primer. Wait twp hours for the painted brick to dry. Add an additional coat if the primer shows through.
