Clean Algae Off Vinyl Siding

Vinyl siding lasts longer than paint and it is relatively easy to clean. However, just as any other surface, vinyl siding can get dirty. Algae and mildew can grow there, leaving tell-tale green or black spots. Cleaning this off does not take strong chemicals. In fact, using bleach or other harsh substances may do more harm than good to the siding and surrounding plants. Commercial cleaners for siding are available, but you can also use cleaners you may already have around the house.

Instructions

1. Mix a mild detergent and warm water in a mop bucket. If you use liquid dish detergent add about a tbs. per gallon.

2. Choose the area of the siding you want to start with first. It's easier to clean the lower areas first and then clean sections that require a ladder. You can start at the top and work your way down, but you must rinse the soap off so that it doesn't dry on the vinyl, which could cause streaking.

3. Gently rinse off the siding with a garden hose. Don't spray with too much force and be careful not to get any water beneath the siding. Wear safety goggles to protect your eyes from dirt and dirty water that may splatter off of the siding.

4. Dampen a sponge mop in the bucket of soapy water. Scrub the algae from the bottom siding with the mop. If the algae is stuck fast, use a soft bristled brush or broom to scrub it until it is gone.

5. Set up your ladder on a sturdy surface. If the area around your home is soft earth or another unstable surface you may need to get a large, thick piece of plywood or another hard surface for the ladder. Now scrub the top areas, section by section. Rinse the cleaner off the siding with the garden hose.
