Color Ideas for a House
Choosing a color for the exterior of your home can take time and patience. It may even seem as if the possibilities are endless. Begin by simply selecting paint chips with colors that appeal to you. Take them home from the paint or hardware store to get an idea of how they might look against existing landscape and in direct sunlight.
Historic
Generally, three shades of paint are used to color a home: trim, accent and siding. Historical homes, such as Victorians, use a variety of bold colors to accentuate architectural features of the home. Typical color ideas for such houses include a neutral siding paint in cream, white or light gray with accent colors of darker grays and trim colors of burgundy, navy blue or forest green. To make it easier for you to choose color ideas, various paint companies offer palettes specifically for certain styles of historic homes, including Victorian, Craftsman, colonial and mid-century modern.
Landscape Inspired
You can find color inspiration everywhere around your home, from the surrounding landscape to what is planted in the garden. If you live in a coastal area, a beach-style home fits in the area well and features simple colors of white, light blue and sea-foam green. Homes in the southwest often feature a color palette inspired by the desert, with red, brown and yellow paint ideas. Paint the home a neutral color in cream or white if you have colorful landscaping in the yard to accentuate blooms and shrubs. A simple home color with a vibrant and bold door color like red keep the home from looking plain, especially when paired with a well-manicured lawn and landscaping. If you live in a mountainous region or have plenty of trees near the street or in the yard, complement the natural colors with paint in deep greens, browns and reds.
Roof colors
If you have a dark gray roof, select a paint color that will complement existing features. To avoid colors from clashing, choose paint ideas that are similar in color, but not matching. For green roofing shades, look at home paint colors in white, green or gray. Darker colored roofs such as black pair well with paint colors such as blue, white or gray, while brown roofs complement a tan, brown or white color palette. For a gray roof, colors such as black, white, green, gray and blue pair nicely. Keep colors simple and harmonizing to create an ideal paint job.
