Choose Wood Floor Color

Hardwood floors are beautiful, durable and expensive. Over the last decade the wood floor has regained its popularity and added many new types, styles and colors of wood for the homeowner to select. But, all of those choices can make selecting the right color of floor even more difficult. A well selected hardwood floor should take on a timeless quality and appearance that can work with changes in decor and still look good.

Instructions

1. Determine the amount of square footage inside the house that will be covered with hardwood floor. A flooring company will often measure for free and explain overage and finishing costs as well.

2. Calculate the budget you can comfortably afford for this part of your flooring needs. Square footage and budget will identify what types of hardwood floors you can afford and this will contribute to which color of floor will work best for you. Types of wood will stain differently depending on the underlying color of the wood, the open or closed grain, the amount of grain and other species specific features.

3. Bring samples of the color of the decor and furniture that will be featured in the home. Often furniture will be made of stained wood and these different types of stains will need to look good with the floor color. Spread samples of the types of wood floor, that is within your budget, across a flat surface and compare these samples with your decor samples. Often, one type of floor or a general color of stain will immediately look better than others.

4. Take several similar wood flooring samples, lighter and darker than your favorite, to your home. Lay the samples on the floor under your lighting with your wall colors. Observe the samples in the morning, at mid-day and in the evening since colors change as the amount of light changes. This will allow you to make your final selection with confidence.
