Change Red-colored Bricks Into Brown Bricks

Red bricks can easily be painted brown.

Red bricks are a common building material. They are used not only on the exterior of a house, but also along the inside around fireplaces. Red bricks and all other types of bricks can be painted to a different color to fit your needs. If you are tired of the red brick on your house, you can paint it brown and give your house a brand-new feel in no time.

Instructions

1. Sand the bricks with medium-grade sandpaper. Go over the entire surface in a circular motion. Scuff it up somewhat and remove any loose mortar. Rub off any paint, if it was painted before. Scrub the surface with soap and water using a stiff brush. Rinse off the soap with water and let it dry throughly. Sweep up along the bricks with a vacuum.

2. Cover the surface of the brick with a masonry latex primer. Open up a can of primer and pour it into a paint tray. Run a paint roller through the tray and spread out the primer over the entire surface of brick, moving from one side to the other. Let the primer dry completely.

3. Pour the brown latex paint into a paint tray and apply the paint with a roller just like the primer was applied. Move in a "W" pattern from side to side over the brick. This will prevent streaks in the paint. Apply the first coat and let it dry for at least one hour.

4. Apply a second coat of paint just like the first and let it dry overnight. Inspect the bricks and verify that the desired color has been achieved. Add a third brown coat, if necessary to reach the color you want. Wait two weeks before you hang anything on the brick so the paint can fully cure.
