Flattening Urethane Fresh paint

Add a flattening agent to your paint prior to use to lower the gloss level.

Urethane paints are rated according to their gloss level to provide the paint user with a general idea of the shine produced from the dried surface. This shine occurs when you create smooth painted finishes, so when you want to reduce the shininess of your paint, you need to introduce an additive that breaks up that smoothness. A flattening agent does precisely that by adding particles to the paint that break up the smoothness without adding visible texture to the paint. All you have to do is mix the additive in with the paint to flatten the gloss down and get a more matte finish.

Instructions

1. Weigh the urethane paint you wish to flatten on a scale. Note the weight of the urethane for later consultation. Pour the paint into a mixing can.

2. Examine the can of paint to determine the present gloss level of the paint. Generally you can flatten the paint down one gloss level by adding the agent.

3. Multiply the weight of the paint by 15 percent. Weigh the flattening agent before adding it to the urethane paint. Add the agent by weight, pouring enough of the agent to equal 15 percent of the weight of the urethane paint into the paint mixing can.

4. Mix the flattening agent in thoroughly with the urethane paint using a wooden stirring stick.

5. Test the flattened paint on a scrap piece of plywood or a piece of cardboard. If flattening from gloss to satin was not enough, then switch to a satin urethane paint and flatten that instead.
