Develop A Virtual Kitchen

Design the virtual kitchen of your dreams with an online program or purchased software.

Building a virtual kitchen is much easier than it sounds. While you won't be able to cook a meal, hang pots or sweep the floor, your virtual kitchen will give you a glimpse of what your design could look like when you turn it into reality. Virtual kitchen design is essentially the same as actual kitchen design. You will need to choose flooring, cabinetry, counter tops, appliances, a sink and hardware. Additional elements, like an island, a kitchen table or a hutch, may be of interest to you as well. The easiest way to build a virtual kitchen is with an online program or a kitchen design computer software program.

Instructions

1. Review online programs for creating virtual kitchens. Consider a program like the GE Virtual Kitchen Designer Tool available at geappliances.com. The Virtual Kitchen Designer Tool allows users to select from four different kitchen styles, including a cafe kitchen, contemporary kitchen, classic kitchen, and a blue stainless kitchen. For each of the kitchen styles, users can choose the color of appliances and walls, materials used on the floors and countertops, and also cabinetry color. This program also features information from GE about each appliance found in the virtual kitchens. Consider other programs like My Room Designer, available at dupont.com, for additional kitchen designs.

2. Purchase a kitchen design computer software program for an individualized look. For a novice designer, consider a program like the Home and Landscape Design Suite from Punch Software. This program is available for $99.99 and can be downloaded straight from the company's website, punchsoftware.com. If you prefer a more traditional method of shipment, the program can also be shipped to your home through the mail. The Home and Landscape Design Suite offers features like a cabinet designer, global sun positioning, 3-D elevation views, and a budget estimator. For an advanced designer, consider a program from a software company like Chief Architect. Chief Architect offers a design program, called Chief Architect Interiors, in which users can professionally design the look of their virtual kitchen. This program offers features like the Smart Cabinet Designer tool, CAD (computer-aided drafting) tools, and an extensive library of name brand materials, paint colors and fixtures. Expect to pay $1,495.00 for this professional design program.

3. Start building your virtual kitchen! Choose a flooring material, counter-top material, cabinetry, hardware, refrigerator, dishwasher, sink, stove and other appliances. Be creative and keep your family or client in mind while you make your design decisions.
