Most older homes have wooden porch floors.
A covered exterior porch is a great way to enjoy being outside while still being protected from rain and the sun. If you are building a new home with a porch, adding one to your home, or refurbishing your existing porch, you should carefully consider your front porch flooring options.
Wood
Wood is probably the most common flooring for a covered porch. There are a number of different options to choose from. Pine or cedar tongue-and-groove planks are probably the most common because they are dimensionally stable and take paint very well. If the porch is very close to the ground, then the flooring should be made of pressure treated wood to prevent rot from water.
Composite
Composite material is a combination of sawdust, small wood pieces and plastic, all held together with resin. Composite is low maintenance, durable and works well for areas where there is high foot traffic.
Stone or slate
Stone or slate can give your porch an elegant feel that will last a lifetime. Stone and slate are expensive options and more difficult to install, but they require little maintenance other than cleaning and sealing every few years. These hard surfaces can withstand high traffic.
Concrete
Concrete is a permanent option that will last as long as your house. Concrete is versatile because you can paint it any color you want and even stamp it to create textures and patterns. Concrete requires very little maintenance other than cleaning and occasional painting.
Indoor/Outdoor carpeting
Indoor/outdoor carpeting is made to look like grass and is made from the plastic polypropylene. It is highly resistant to moisture and is ideal in areas around a porch hot tub. This carpeting is available in multiple color options. There is limited maintenance but this material can wear out quickly ideal in high traffic areas.
