Fresh paint Suggestions For A Girl'S Room

Paint Ideas for a Girl's Room

Though ideas about "pink for girls, blue for boys" have long been dismissed as antiquated across the board, it can still be a challenge to come up with creative ideas for your child's bedroom. Paint is one of the most dominant factors in any room, and you can use this tool to great effect when decorating a bedroom for a girl. Choosing nontraditional paint colors doesn't mean you have to go to the opposite end of the spectrum to try for a "masculine" appearance, or that you need to strive for a unisex look. A girl's room can look pretty in virtually any color.

Personality and Paint

If the girl in question is old enough to talk or even to express preferences nonverbally, choosing paint colors can be easier without as much guesswork. If she's old enough to let you know her favorite color, ask! Even if her favorite color changes from week to week, you can still get a grasp of her favorite color spectrum and general likes and dislikes. If she's a bit older, she's even more likely to want input into the appearance and creative style of her room. Look to her for guidance, but since it's your house, be sure you like her choice as well. Let her select from paint samples, and consider interesting alternatives such as stripes, polka dots or borders.

Baby Girls

If you're expecting a new baby, it's obviously impractical to try to speculate upon the personality your future daughter may have. Instead, try to think of colors that will both please you and ideally foster a comfortable environment for the baby. Greens, yellows and even reds all can be classified as fairly gender-neutral; if you're looking for the feminine touch, these colors are not excluded, either. If you think the color you choose makes too much of a bold statement, consider softening it with a border, a pretty stencil or even a mural you think would be pleasing to a child.

Bright Colors

Many of us tend to think of pastel colors--be they pink or blue, yellow or purple--as typical colors for girls' rooms. Don't be shy, however, about giving bright colors a chance. Just because a girl likes colors that are "pretty" doesn't mean she won't be attracted to bright colors, finding them just as beautiful.

The Room Itself

Regardless of its future occupant, the room itself deserves some consideration, too. The prettiest pale green color may look wrong in a room that's too large to be painted a light color. If the girl likes dark colors and you decide to paint her room using a darker shade, you can always use lighter complementary colors (or white) to brighten up the trim and lighten the room. You can always further lighten the room with a choice of bedclothes, rugs and other decor to play up the maximum potential of the paint.

Don't Forget the Details

Don't feel limited to the options presented by wall paint. You can also use ceilings and trim to maximum advantage to open up possibilities with paint. Clouds on ceilings are a delightful touch for any child's room, but why limit yourself to the literal? Wall murals with trees can feature branches extending onto the ceiling to replicate a jungle canopy, or simply paint the ceiling a contrasting or complementary color for an easy, but very striking, addition. All children will love these creative touches.
