Paint is an easy, inexpensive way to improve the look of any space.
Paint is a simple and inexpensive way to improve the look of any interior space, but paint is rarely used to its fullest potential. A versatile media for home decorating, paint brings color to spaces where color is needed, brings old rooms to life and coordinates interior spaces in new and bold ways. Think about how color can bring new life to your spaces and invest the time to make the colorful change.
Walls
The walls are the most often painted surface, but white is too often the color of choice. Be bold, choose a theme and bring color into interior spaces. Walls are a blank canvas to do with what you will, but several simple rules should be observed. Use light colors to make small spaces look larger, use dark colors to make large spaces feel smaller and always use complimentary colors in interior spaces. Add interest by painting moldings, such as baseboards, a complimentary color.
Faux Finishing
Faux finishing refers to any painted finish meant to replicate the look of another finish type. Sponging, ragging, stripling, dragging, color washing, and spattering, tortoiseshelling, woodgraining, distressing and marbling are all faux techniques done with paint. Each of these finishes create a different illusion of texture where none exists. Each of these techniques is easy to accomplish with a few tools and a gallon of paint or two.
Ceilings
Ceilings are an often overlooked surface in the home, yet painting the ceiling can create a finished look in painted spaces. Painting high ceilings dark colors can bring them down a notch or two and make the room feel less expansive. Likewise, painting the ceiling a lighter color can make smaller rooms feel larger. Consider painting the ceiling a complimentary color to the walls and paint the room's baseboards the same color to tie the whole space together.
Counters
If you're looking for a way to refinish laminate counter tops in the bathroom without going to the expense of replacing them, try paint. HGTV suggests choosing a trendy color that works with bathroom decor. Make sure to chose a color that will continue to work with the bathroom's theme for years to come and chose a paint that is washable. Sand, prime, paint and lacquer bathroom counters for a bright, inexpensive change.
Floors
Concrete, wood, tile and vinyl laminate floors are all surfaces that accept paint well. Floors should be thoroughly cleaned and primed before being painted and paint chosen for floors should be highly durable, but painted floors can bring a new look at a room where the homeowner might not be able to afford new flooring. Painting designs on floor surfaces can enhance the look of the space, so consider painting a rug on a concrete floor, or hop-scotch squares on the floor in a family game room.
