Choose Colors For Any Dining Area

Enjoy mixing and maching colors for your dining area.

Choosing colors for your dining room requires careful thought about the color scheme and the intended use of this room. Not all dining rooms are alike. Some dining rooms are only used on special occasions, while other dining rooms are used often to entertain family and friends with homemade culinary creations. You can create an elaborate dining area with dark, rich colors and expensive furniture, or design a casual, mellow dining room by using pastel colors.

Instructions

1. Look at the colors of your light fixtures, table and other accessories in the room. Baby blue or pastel purple walls can complement white crown molding and a Victorian style chandelier. Lighter paint, such as yellow or cream, also works well in combination with oak, pine or light-colored furniture in the room. However, you can still feature lighter colors on the walls if you have a cherrywood dining table because contrasting colors work too. Dark walls may be too overwhelming next to dark furniture. You can also leave the walls white if you have dark furniture, and bring in colorful tablecloths and accents.

2. Choose colors that reflect the mood you want to set for the room. The right colors can help create the setting you desire for your dining area. Cool, light shades, such as baby blue, create a calming environment. Darker shades of violet or red may be too bold for a dining room, so consider only painting only one accent wall if you choose dark colors.

3. Paint an accent wall plum, burgundy or forest green if you want a more dramatic, elegant dining room.

4. Choose more neutral shades such as beige, tan or brown if you want to create a casual dining area. These colors work well if the dining room adjoins with the living room.

5. Adorn your table with a colorful tablecloth that matches the mood you want to set for the time of year or occasion. Dark burgundy tablecloths work well during Thanksgiving and other winter holidays. Yellow or purple tablecloths on your table lighten the room up during spring. Decorate with a wall clock and framed art to add a finishing touch to the room.
