There are a variety of siding options for your house.
If you are building or remodeling a home, the question of what materials to use for siding will be a big decision. Siding options come in a variety of forms, but the most popular ones today are wood, vinyl, brick, stone, stucco and a relative newcomer fiber cement. The costs of siding vary based on the materials selected.
Fiber Cement
According to Cal Finder, fiber cement siding is said to be the wave of the future. Cal Finder notes fiber cement or Hardi Plank is termite resistant, water resistant and cheaper than stone or wood. According to Cal Finder, fiber cement costs between $3 and $4 per square foot and between $5 and $11 installed depending on the size of the job, labor and painting needs.
Vinyl
According to Cal Finder, vinyl is the most popular and least expensive siding material and most companies offer a lifetime warranty. Cal Finder says that most vinyl sidings cost between $2 and $3 per square foot, with total cost including installation running between $2 and $7 per square foot. Cal Finder notes that vinyl siding is cheap and available in many colors, but it also can trap moisture and cause mold and mildew. It also does not provide much insulation, which can lead to high energy bills.
Wood
According to Cal Finder, wood is not as popular today as other siding options have overtaken it due to cost and durability. Cal Finder says that hardwood like cedar runs from $3.50 to $6.50 per square foot, while plywood materials would be $1 to $2 less. Cypress costs around $2 per square foot.
Veneers, Brick, Stone and Stucco
Stucco, which is made from a mixture of either sand and cement or latex, costs from $4 to $9 per square foot with the latex type costing more than the sand version, according to Cal Finder. Veneers are forms of brick or stone. The bricks are not actually mounted against the home, but tied to it with metal to form a veneer with a gap between the new facade and the existing exterior wall. According to Cal Finder, brick and stone veneer siding prices range from $11 to $15 per square foot. Meanwhile, real brick siding costs around $18 per square foot with real stone running between $15 and $30 per square foot.
