Matching your shutter to your house's trim is crucial.
Most people vow that a fresh coat of paint is the best way to decorate a home's exterior. However, if you lack the time or energy to paint your whole house, but want to revamp it in some way, shutters are the way to go. Shutters are a wise addition to the exterior of any home, providing a quaintly rustic appearance, making it evocative of a charming country cottage without causing it to look overdone. Shutters don't take long to paint or install; however, you do need to match them perfectly with the house trim.
Instructions
1. Remove a piece of the trim from an inconspicuous area. Perhaps that area is your back porch or around a back window. Unscrew the trim or pull the nails out with the back side of a hammer. You must match your shutters to the trim or the front door perfectly; thus, having an actual sample is crucial. Alternatively, take a picture of your trim or the shade of your front door in an extreme close-up with a digital camera.
2. Bring either your trim sample or digital photograph to a paint store. Get several pint or half-pint paint samples that seem to match your trim.
3. Paint the front of a single shutter in the paint sample that seems to match the trim and/or front door the best. Lean the shutter against the front of the house. Study how well the shutter's color matches the trim or front door from a few yards away. If you seem to have a perfect match, you're done. If you think there's something off about the color, you should wipe off the paint and try the other samples until you find a perfect match.
