Fresh paint An Indication On The Rock

If you'd like to paint a sharp, professional-looking sign on a rock, you'll have to deal with some complications. Because rocks are very dense and nonporous, they don't hold paint well. To create a painted sign that won't flake away, treat the rock with a very sticky, enduring base primer. Unless you're equipped with a very steady hand, you'll have difficulty painting straight, attractive letters and designs on rocks, which tend to be irregularly shaped. Ease the painting process by using a stencil as your guide.

Instructions

1. Scrub the rock clean, using a degreasing cleanser and coarse steel wool.

2. Rinse the rock, using a pressure washer. Let the rock dry under the sun for one to two hours.

3. Spray the back of your stencil with spray stencil adhesive.

4. Attach the stencil to the rock where you want the sign to appear. Affix the sides of the stencil to the rock, using painter's tape.

5. Apply shellac spray primer to the exposed letters of your stencil. Overapplication may cause primer to drip down the stencil. Prevent this by applying a light coating and by maintaining 8 inches between the rock and the spray can. Let the rock dry for two hours.

6. Apply paint to the stencil just as you did the primer. For an enduring sign, use an acrylic enamel. Carefully remove the stencil before the enamel dries to prevent unwanted peeling.
