Change the material or color of your roof for a new look.
Create a new exterior look for your entire home by changing elements of your roof. The roof on a house protects the structure and influences its value upon resale. Whether you are changing the color or adding living space, a new roof adds value to your home.
Rooftop Patio
Increase the function of your roof by adding a rooftop patio. A popular addition to roofs, especially in large cities, rooftop patios are constructed of many of the same materials that ground-level patios are, including tile and slate. Adding a rooftop patio addition is a major home improvement project requiring, in most cases, reinforcement of the standard roof before work on the patio can begin. Completion of a rooftop patio expands your living space and typically adds more privacy than exists in a ground-level patio.
Go Green
Green living focuses on sustainability, energy efficiency and eco-friendly solutions to common problems and issues. A green roof (or rooftop garden) is constructed of soil and plants, built on a multilayer membrane system. The membrane system keeps your home dry and clean while supporting and maintaining plants on your rooftop. Although modern green roofing systems are only about 30 years old, roofs made from plants, such as early sod roofs, have been around for many years and are still popular in rural European settings. Choose a low-maintenance "extensive" green roof that requires little human interaction after installation. Of the two types, extensive is the best choice for most homeowners. "Intensive" green roofs, which typically include shrubbery and small trees, require a high level of owner involvement.
Change It Up
Change your roofing material to change the exterior look of your home without committing to a major renovation. Asphalt shingles, wood shingles, slate, metal, clay and ceramic tile are all popular options. When selecting a roofing material, keep in mind the climate and weather conditions. If rust is a problem in your area, don't put a metal roof on your house.
Change the color of your roof for a dramatic effect. Most roofing materials, including slate and metal, can be purchased in a variety of colors to add visual appeal to your home's exterior. For a more economical change, paint the rooftop. Most rooftop paints are designed for waterproofing and mildew reduction, but some of them are manufactured in colors.
