Patch & Repair A Colored Stucco Home

Stucco is created with mortar.

Over time, stucco may crack or separate from the wall on which it is applied. Stucco damage isn't extremely difficult to fix, but it does require patience, some practice and at least a couple of days' time. If the stucco is painted, you may run into problems if you don't have matching paint on hand. Take a chip to a paint or home improvement store and ask them to match it.

Instructions

1. Break away loose stucco with a masonry chisel and hammer. Position the chisel on the loose pieces and strike it with the hammer. Continue chipping until no more stucco easily falls from the wall.

2. Remove any small pieces along the edges with a stiff paint scraper. Leave the sharp, rough edges of the broken section.

3. Smooth the area to be patched and the rough edges with a wire brush. Vacuum up the dust.

4. Mix some mortar and water in a bucket according to the directions on the package. The mortar's consistency should be similar to peanut butter.

5. Dampen the area to be patched with water from a spray bottle. A spray bottle will give you better control than a hose, and it won't wet the area too much.

6. Apply the "scratch" layer of mortar with a trowel, smoothing it to about 3/8-inch thick. Work the mortar into the rough edges with the trowel.

7. Let the mortar layer dry for a bit, until it gets tackier. Scratch a cross-hatch pattern into the mortar with the tip of the trowel. Let the layer dry completely, for 24 to 48 hours.

8. Dampen the area again. Dampen the float and load it with mortar. Apply the mortar to the patched area, matching the pattern of the surrounding stucco. Let the repaired area dry completely before painting.
