Painting aluminum siding is an inexpensive and easy way to update the entire house. Here are the steps to take to paint aluminum siding.
Instructions
1. Pressure wash the aluminum siding.
As is true with any paint job, you need to make sure the surface is completely clean before you can start painting. A pressure washer is the easiest and fastest way to clean a house for painting and can usually be rented for the day at a fair price.
2. Sand the aluminum siding where needed.
If there are any chalky or oxidized portions of aluminum siding, sand them clear and smooth. If you don't do the work now, it will catch up with you in the form of a ruined paint job later on down the line.
3. Prime the aluminum siding.
If the new paint color is drastically different from the old, or if the old paint is flaking and in bad condition, primer will be necessary. Use oil based paint meant for metals, mixed with a paint thinner; talk to your paint store about what exact ratio will be needed, it depends on the new color you will be using.
4. Start painting.
Using an acrylic latex paint meant for the outdoors, start to paint your aluminum siding. You can do this by hand, or use a paint sprayer (which is faster and easier on the shoulders).
