Clean Colored Wood Siding

Prolong the life of your paint by cleaning your house annually.

Dust buildup can make the color of your home look dirty and faded. Each time the wind blows dust accumulates. The most common areas for this accumulation is below the eves and soffits of the house, places where rain can't hit the siding. Organic debris can also provide the nutrients required for moss and mildew growth, which can ultimately hold moisture against the siding and damage the paint. Painted wood siding should be washed, at least, once a year to keep the paint clean and keep debris buildup to a minimum.

Instructions

1. Screw a spray gun nozzle onto the male end of the garden house. Screw the female end of the hose to a water source. Turn the water on. Pull the trigger of the spray gun and adjust the nozzle until the water is a concentrated stream.

2. Set an A-frame ladder up away from the wall about 5 feet. Climb the ladder holding the spray gun in one of your hands and when you reach the top of the ladder spray the top of the house wall from left-to-right and from top-to-bottom. The idea is to keep the dirt continually moving down the wall to the ground. Do this until you've spayed the entire wall.

3. Fill a mop bucket with water and 1 tbsp. of mild dish soap. Place a soft-bristle scrub brush and a nonabrasive sponge into the bucket.

4. Set the ladder right next to the side of the house. Grab the bucket and climb to the top of the ladder.

5. Lift the scrub brush and scrub the siding from side-to-side and from top-to-bottom. Clean a few feet at a time or as far as your arm can reach. Return the scrub brush to the bucket and then go over the siding with the sponge. Repeat this process until you reach the bottom of the siding and all areas have been scrubbed and sponged.

6. Spray the siding again with the hose to rinse away all dirt and soap. Spray until soap bubbles stop forming on the wall. Spray from side-to-side and from top-to-bottom.
