Apply Gold Leaf To Some Wall

Apply Gold Leaf to a Wall

Applying gold leaf to a wall can add an elegant accent to your home. When choosing gold leaf, you can buy either imitation gold or genuine gold. The imitation gold leaf is cheaper and thicker, making it easier to apply to a wall. Both types of gold leaf require a similar application process, and if done correctly you will not be able to tell the difference between them.

Instructions

1. Prepare the wall by painting it with two coats of primer to make it as smooth as possible.

2. Add two coats of finish paint in your desired color. Eggshell white is the best color to put under the gold leaf to prevent the paint from showing. Otherwise, choose a color that will complement the gold leaf well.

3. Apply a water-based gold leaf adhesive, also called size, with a small roller. Let dry for the specified amount of time on the package, usually a half-hour to three hours, until it is tacky.

4. Place the gold leaf on the wall, keeping it as straight and flat as possible. Make sure the paper backing is on the outside. Brush over the surface with a soft-bristled gilder's brush to smooth out any air bubbles. Peel off the paper backing.

5. Rub the surface of the gold leaf again with the gilder's brush to catch any stray bits of gold. Reapply gold leaf to any areas you may have missed, or leave the coverage imperfect to allow the wall paint to show through.

6. Seal the gold leaf by painting a thin, clear acrylic topcoat onto the surface with a roller. This will protect the leaf against UV light, water and scratches.
