Give that old radiator some new life with a coat of spray paint.
Radiators can be an eyesore, even for those not so interested in decorating. But you can change the look of a radiator by spray painting it, which sure beats hiding it behind a screen or piece of furniture. The key is to use the correct spray paint because of the high heat the radiator generates.
Instructions
1. Turn off the radiator and let it cool before starting. The wait time may be several hours.
2. Secure the drop cloths behind the radiator and on the floor around the radiator using the painter's tape to hold it in place.
3. Clean the radiator of old rust and peeling paint. Rub it with the sandpaper, scrub it with the hard-bristled brush and scrape with the putty knife to get the surface as smooth as possible. Mix the tri-sodiuim phosphate according to package instructions and wipe the radiator with the solution to clean all grease and grime off the radiator.
4. Shake the red-metal primer can and spray it on the radiator. Check the can for the proper distance to hold it from the radiator. This will vary between paints. Spray in a sweeping motion back and forth, then up and down, overlapping strokes as you go. Allow it to dry as recommended on the instructions.
5. Shake the high heat and radiator paint can and spray it on the radiator as you did the primer. Be sure it has dried the required length of time before turning the radiator back on.
