Lead paint is a known health hazard, particularly for children younger than age 6. Lead poisoning can cause behavior problems, learning disabilities, seizures and death.
Identification
Lead paint was banned in 1978. Any house built before that is presumed to have some lead paint.
Cost of Removing Lead Paint
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates lead paint removal costs thousands of dollars for the average house. The cost estimate does not include having to vacate the property during abatement.
Specialists
Only licensed professionals can safely remove lead paint. They are licensed by the EPA and must maintain safety criteria at all times.
Other Options
The EPA states lead paint in good condition should not present a hazard. Other options include painting over the lead paint, keeping children from chewing on window sills or door frames, cleaning up any paint chips with damp paper towels, cleaning frequently and washing children's hands often.
If You Are Remodeling
Starting in April 2010, anyone working on renovating, repairing or painting houses or day care facilities built before 1978 must be certified and follow specific work practices according to the EPA.
