Choose a Color for a Living Room Wall
There are many things to consider when choosing a color for a living room wall. Does the room flow into another room, or is it self-contained? What color is your furniture? Will you be selling the house soon? Narrow your choices by following the tips below to help you decide on a color for your living room wall.
Instructions
1. Determine the function of the living room. Is it formal? If so, you will want a more subdued, traditional color, such as taupe or maroon. Is it a more causal gathering place? Then feel free to experiment with pale shades of yellow, brown or even purple.
2. Look at the neighboring areas. If the living room is open to other rooms, choose a paint color that will also complement those rooms. While a gray-blue color might complement your sofa nicely, it might not look so good in the adjoining dining room. Find a color that works in all of the rooms that flow into your living room.
3. Match the color of something special. While sofas tend to change, you might have one piece of artwork that you know you'll keep forever. If so, look for a color in that artwork and paint the wall that color.
4. Check out the lighting, which can change the color of a wall. Paint a few areas of the wall with your narrowed-down choices, then stand back and watch the colors change as the sunlight plays over the wall. Also look at the color of the wall in lamplight during the evening.
5. Use more than one color. If you can't narrow it down to a final color, consider using two colors. Paint three of the walls one color and an accent color on the fourth wall. Or paint the bottom third of the wall one color, install a chair rail above it and then paint the top of the wall another color.
