Choose Fresh paint Colors For Trimwork

Interior decorating often requires a change in paint color for the wood areas in a room. One area painted often is the trimwork around the baseboards of walls or crown molding between the top of walls and the ceiling. Selecting the right paint color is necessary to coordinate with the wall's colors, curtains and furniture in the room. You will have a wide variety of colors and paint styles to choose from when painting trimwork. Additionally, several coloring options are also available for this project.

Instructions

1. Determine the color scheme currently in the room. For example, monochromatic schemes use variations of the same color, while neutral colors use different shades to offset each other.

2. Select a trim color that is either lighter or darker than the wall color. This highlights the trim and helps set it apart from the wall.

3. Consult a color wheel for selecting colors. Use complementary colors, normally those found near the opposite end of the wheel, to ensure that the colors don't clash. Keep in mind that lighter colors tend to make rooms feel larger, whereas darker colors can make a room appear smaller. Select a color two shades lighter than what you think you want, especially since paint tends to look darker when painted on the trim.

4. Paint all the trimwork, such as window casings, crown molding and baseboards, in the same color for a more uniform look. Unified colors give the illusion that all trimwork was painted and installed at the same time.

5. Paint the trim in either a gloss or semi-gloss enamel paint. This allows the color to have a slight shine and the paint to reflect light. This paint style also plays up the natural light or shadows in the room.
