Warm colors can make large spaces look friendlier.
Repainting a home can do a lot for how it looks and feels, but sometimes it's intimidating. Choosing the wrong colors and painting technique for a large space, such as a big living room or great room, can make it appear cavernous and unappealing. However, the correct painting techniques allow you to manipulate the space, making your room feel welcoming and friendly.
Use the Right Tools
Large spaces are more difficult to paint evenly before the paint dries. Choosing the correct tools can help reduce the chance of an uneven finish. HGTV recommends professional 18-inch rollers and covers and a larger paint tray to fit, which allows the painter to cover more of the wall at once and makes the job go faster. Consider using long extension poles to reach difficult spots and reduce the need to climb up and down a ladder.
Choose Color Wisely
According to House Painting Tutorials, deeper or darker colors are appropriate for extra-large rooms. While strong colors can make a small room appear to close in on the occupants, they help large rooms feel cozier. Warm colors--tones in the red, orange and yellow families--are also an excellent choice for a large living room space since they make the walls feel closer. In very long rooms, painting the shortest walls a deeper shade or adding a strong accent wall helps to prevent the feeling of sitting in a hallway.
Break Things up
Breaking up long walls with decorative painting patterns, texture or faux finishes can give them more visual interest and prevent the room from feeling overwhelming. In rooms with chair rails or picture moldings, paint each area a different shade or color to help provide interest. Don't go overboard though; too many different colors can result in a carnival effect. Keeping each color in the same general range provides a unified look without being boring.
Combine Spaces
Some large living room spaces are actually several "rooms," separated only by an arch or other decorative feature. It is tempting to paint each area its own color, but this technique can end up looking busy. Instead choose a single shade for the entire area, and save interesting colors for accent walls or trim. The result is a unified, attractive space.
