Spray guns can drastically hasten and ease the painting process. Unfortunately, in the hands of an inexperienced user, the guns can also lead to unfortunate results. Learn some fundamental tips before you attempt to spray paint a surface in or around your home. You could end up with an unattractive finish and/or permanent stains.
Distance
To prevent paint from sagging down vertical surfaces, don't hold the gun too close to the surface. For best results, maintain 18 inches between the surface and spray gun tip. Don't hold the gun any farther from the surface. This may create a paint fog that could lead to overspray stains on adjacent surfaces.
Application
Promote neater results by employing the proper application strategy based on the type of surface you are painting. Move the spray gun horizontally when painting horizontal surfaces, such as floors and ceilings. Move the gun up and down on vertical surfaces, such as doors and walls.
Masking
Even if you use the appropriate application techniques, you're still likely to create a relatively significant amount of overspray. Take the time to meticulously mask off any nearby areas you'd like kept free from paint. Use masking paper and plastic coverings to protect woodwork, countertops and furniture. Use thick, heavy-duty canvas drop cloths to cover flooring. Use a low-tack painter's tape to protect smaller items, such as metallic hardware.
Lap Lines
When amateurs try to spray paint onto ceilings and walls, they often end up with slight discolorations within the finish. Professionals refer to these areas as lap lines. They are the result of uneven drying due to inconsistent application. To prevent this occurrence and promote a uniform finish, always paint to a wet edge. Once you begin painting a flat surface, don't stop until you have painted the entire area. Taking breaks will lead to discoloration and uneven paint sheen due to inconsistent drying.
