Test For Acrylic Offers

Know the original paint type, before repainting.

Model makers, fine artists, house painters, automotive detailers and interior designers all have to deal with painting their products in one way or another. Although huge advances in formulas have occurred, paint remains vulnerable to fading, staining, peeling and cracking. Often when a previously painted item comes into possession, the base of the original paint is unknown. When refinishing a painted item, knowing what kind of paint to use often depends on whether the original painting was done in acrylic or oil-based paint. To find what kind of paint was used, conduct a simple test in an inconspicuous area.

Instructions

1. Clean the test area by wiping it down with degreasing cleaner. Allow the area to dry.

2. Dampen a cloth or a cotton ball with denatured alcohol. Rub the dampened cloth or cotton ball back and forth several times in the test area.

3. Look at the side of the cloth or cotton ball that was rubbed against the paint. If the paint color shows up on the cloth or cotton, it means that the paint is acrylic and water-based.

4. Double-check the test by also testing the paint for an oil base. Wipe the area clean of the residual alcohol. Dampen a clean cloth or cotton ball with turpentine. Rub the area. If the paint is oil-based, the turpentine will start to dissolve it.
