Color Block A Wall

Color blocking allows you to paint multiple colors on one wall.

Transforming the look of a wall with paint is not a difficult process if you use a color blocking technique. This is an uncomplicated way to draw attention to a focal point in the room or add pizazz to an otherwise dull room. The color blocking technique allows you to select and paint zones on the wall that are a different color from the main wall. You can use multiple colors or only one additional color to give your wall a zany or eclectic look.

Instructions

1. Purchase your paint colors with the room colors in mind. For instance, you may select colors that are present in a painting, rug, fabric or other item you wish to highlight in the room. Coordinating the colors with the room is key to creating a unified look.

2. Pick the design with the room decor in mind. For instance, if a painting or rug is the focal point and has curvy lines and circles, mimicking this in the color blocking is an effective way to give the room a whimsical or stimulating look. Rectangles and squares give the room a sophisticated, modern look.

3. Plan the color blocking design with the room size in mind. Smaller shapes look appropriate in smaller rooms, while large shapes can transform a cavernous room into a more intimate space.

4. Draw the design on the wall lightly with a pencil. Use a tape measure or level if using straight lines.

5. Tape along the straight lines with painter's tape. This creates a guideline and helps maintain the straight line. Use a stencil for curved or circular shapes to speed up the task, otherwise filling in the area may be a tedious process.

6. Paint the taped or stenciled areas. Remove the tape or stencil once the paint dries.
