Cinder block homes
are usually extremely simple in construction.
Cinder block homes are basic, economical and strong construction most often seen at shorelines where homeowners face threats of hurricane-force winds every autumn. While these homes aren't impervious to nature's wrath, they do stand up better than newer timber frame construction. Refurbishing one of these homes is no simple task, but if you take a look at stucco and like the look of Tuscan homes, you'll find a style that will bring out some character in your drab little beachfront home.
Instructions
1. Replace major components of the home as necessary to bring it up to code. You may have to clean or repair the interior surfaces of the home, replace windows and doors, or even replace the roof trusses. All of these replacements, however, will allow you to bring the home fully up to date. While you are performing this work, have professionals check the home's plumbing, heating and electrical systems to guard against future problems. These steps are particularly important following a major storm.
2. Build interesting architectural features into the home, such as a courtyard or arched garden entryways. You might also consider adding a tiled patio with cinder block walls facing the most attractive view from the home. You can use cinder blocks to add these features inexpensively.
3. Apply stucco over the concrete block to give the home a less industrial, more hand-built appearance. You can stucco interior walls, as well, if you wish. Unlike drywall or wood paneling, stucco is not affected by water or humidity. The entire house could flood to the roof rafters, and all it would require after the water receded would be a good cleaning.
4. Replace the existing roof shingles with traditional clay tile roofing. This will complete the home's transformation into an Italian-style homestead. It should be noted, however, that clay tile roofing is not entirely maintenance-free. Heavy winds can dislodge tiles, necessitating their replacement. If you are unfamiliar with installing these tiles, it is best to have a professional roofer do so.
5. Landscape the home with a variety of plants that blend well with the home's Mediterranean flavor. Palm trees are acceptable, but you can also occasionally find olive trees at your local nursery that, with careful planting, will thrive and bear fruit. Plant herb gardens around your patio or near the home's kitchen, and flower gardens leading to the home's front entry.
