Use various colors to paint a background.
The options for painting on canvas and the techniques for execution are extremely varied and are a matter of taste and preference. Acrylic and oil paints are the most widely used choices for canvas. Acrylic paint is a better choice when your painting is textural and collagelike. Oil paint creates a smooth, blendable painting. Canvas backgrounds generally are used for theater and plays to create a visual representation of the action's location. Using a canvas background allows your audience to gain a greater sense of where the story takes place.
Instructions
1. Decide which type of paint you will be using. Oil paints will give a smoother look and are highly blendable; choose this if you are painting a sweeping landscape such as rolling hills, an ocean or a sky. Acrylic paints dry much faster and are appropriate for painting intricate city scenes, buildings and objects with more detail.
2. Fill various containers with water and have a rag handy.
3. Sketch out a plan for what you want to paint. You can sketch background elements directly on to the canvas using a pencil or charcoal. Alternatively, you can freestyle your painting and not plan or sketch ahead of time.
4. Decide which colors you will use to paint the background and add dollops of paint to a old plate or painting pallete.
5. Choose a paint brush to work with. Choose a larger brush if you are looking to paint the background a few colors without much detail.
6. Starting from one edge, paint your background on the canvas using fluid strokes. Allow the wrist to be soft and do not force the brush as you paint.
7. Blend two or more colors together using a moist sponge.
8. Allow the background to dry fully before applying a second layer of paint.
